It is hard to make really accurate assessments on the extent of addiction in our population. While stats can be collected from DUIs, drug arrests and drug treatment admissions, for people that don’t fall in one of these groups, statistic collators are reliant on self reporting by addicts. The phenomenon of denial, of course, makes accurate self reporting dubious. Historically, at least in recent years, the accepted figure was 10% of the US population would develop a substance use disorder. Earlier this month, however, the US Surgeon General opined that one in seven would become addicted in their lifetime, truly frightening.
