Trending in the news today are stories of a Lakeland, Florida woman who took the prize for worst self-incriminating move of all time, when she live streamed her drunk driving crash on Periscope video last weekend. Horrified viewers called the police who tracked down the woman and arrested her for DUI.
The story, which has gone viral, is troubling for many reasons. What bothers me is that the woman was making light of driving impaired, and obviously thought she had a like-minded audience on social media, which is probably true. Drunk driving, while it has always, unfortunately, happened, used to be a shameful act–nothing to be bragged about. There were 818 alcohol-related traffic fatalities in Florida in 2012, and per MADD, 28% of all traffic deaths involved alcohol. No joking matter. Stop the madness before you crash and burn from alcoholism.
